Around 9pm Wednesday, the Twofold Security guard, who was tasked with keeping an eye on the evacuated BUPA Eden aged care home across the street from Eden Marine, noticed flames and smoke coming from the back of the school oval.
He immediately alerted authorities who attended and doused the blaze before it could spread any further.
A spokesman for Eden Fire and Rescue said it was a pile of rubbish lit “by persons unknown” just outside the school property near the walkway around Lake Curalo.
Firefighters contained the fire and made the area safe.
They also put up barrier tape to prevent the public and school students getting to close to the site this morning.
Eden Marine High School principal Ian Moorehead said the area that caught fire was right on the border of the school grounds in an area with accumulated garden waste.
Mr Moorehead said the fire was contained very quickly and there was no damage to the school.
Twofold Security owner Pat Neville praised the quick thinking of his employee.
“Had it not been for his quick thinking, there could have been a lot more damage done,” Mr Neville said.
“Although I will have to remonstrate with him for not keeping an eye on his job!” he added with a laugh.
