The event attracted a good field of shooters from across Victoria and southern NSW with entrants from juniors to the “very senior”, organisers said.
Everyone took part in three courses of simulated field targets and one course of the club’s novelty event – the mad minute.
The Shag Shield started a few years ago as a reason to bring together various professional dog trappers from NSW and Victoria as a bit of a social event.
However, it has built and now attracts some younger shooters into the sport with a social atmosphere.
The day also features a barbecue lunch with plenty of fresh salads on offer prepared by the ladies of the club.
Organisers said a number of businesses got on board with the event this year and the club was able to offer a series of prizes for the round.
Other prizes were sponsored by individual club members.
While most awards are self-explanatory, the “Get Out Of Gaol Free Card” is awarded to the shooter who probably needs to thank his (or her) partner the most for being able to participate.
This year, it went to Matt Riijs of Mallacoota and organisers hope he will be able to take part again next year.
The encouragement award went to George Thompson, while the Top Dogger award went to Steve Laffy from Cann River.
One of the Perkins boys from Orbost took out the juniors’ award and received a full case of ammo, while his younger brother took out second prize for a half case of ammo.
Organisers joked it was a family affair when their sister walked away with the encouragement award that contained enough chocolate to feed the family over the next week.
The Ladies event was won by Michelle Craig of Bermagui from a well-compiled round.
She was closely followed by Barb Magrin, also of Bermagui.
Mallacoota Gun Club president Olga Packer trailed the pair to finish third.
In the men’s competition organisers said the scores determined a shooters’ grade on the day.
Topping the A grade standings was Jarrod Pinnock after and excellent round, while Nev Brady was close behind to finish runner-up.
Second in C grade was Warren Packer, edging out Greg Pinnock.
Mario Magrin topped the B grade standings with a solid round.
The day’s overall winner was Mallacoota shooter Andrew Scott, who is now collecting a fine range of cutlery.
Andrew won a lovely custom made high carbon sheath knife with fitted leather sheath and antler handle which was hand finished by R & N Blades of Lakes Entrance.
Jarrod Pinnock had been shooting very well throughout the day and the top spot looked to be his.
However, the mad minute round caused a disruption to his flow and unfortunately he had some very uncharacteristic misses and slipped back to second overall.
Phil Craig is due a special mention for achieving the highest score of 11 out of 19 targets in the mad minute, in an excellent display of skill.
Mallacoota Gun Club would thanked all of the sponsors who’s support made the day possible.
The club also thanked the shooters and their supporters who turned out.
