Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Community and Medical Service and Wandarma Drug and Alcohol service hosted a free forum on methamphetamine use and support on May 8 in Batemans Bay.
It was deemed a success with more then 150 people attending from all backgrounds and the demand has created the need for another forum in the area.
A team of experts who work regularly with users of the drug “ice” and their families will deliver a free forum in Eden at the Aboriginal Evangelical Church on July 23 from 8.30am until 1pm, followed by a light lunch.
The forum is aimed at helping community members manage the growing problem on the Far South Coast and learn how to support people of all ages who are addicted to ice, and also how to manage their own experiences and anxieties when caring for their loved one.
Ice, or methamphetamine, is a stimulating drug that has been growing in popularity and accessibility in current years.
The side effects from “ice” can range from anxiety, anger, irritability, psychosis, extreme behavior and physical deterioration.
The Eden ice forum will feature speakers and representatives from Aboriginal Health Medical Research Council, Katungul, Wandarma, NSW Police and other support services.
Expert speakers will talk about the drug’s effects, dangers, and consequences to health and wellbeing as well as give parents, family members and careers information about prevention for loved ones, friends and community members who are users of the drug.
Jon Rogers, CEO of Katungul, explained that in many social circles, people consider ice socially acceptable.
“The event will also give community members a chance to share their own stories or get confidential counselling for further support,” Mr Rogers said.
“The forum is about giving education and support to those who most need it.”
There is a possibility of a free bus from Bega to the forum if there’s enough interest.
