This poem was written for the anniversary of the GST's introduction, from the point of view of someone's first encounter with the new tax.
I went to do some shopping
Down at the local store
I'd figured at twenty dollars
But now they wanted more
They said "Hey there, Mister,
What you've failed to see
Is that you didn't calculate
The government's GST"
For I had worked out, exactly,
The money to be spent
But I'd forgotten to add on
That extra ten per cent.
I was going to buy a nice cake
Now that was much too hard
So maybe I'll just go back to
Eating bread and lard
They always put more taxes
Onto the battlers, just like me,
So I hope they soon get rid of
That rotten GST!
