Member for Bega, Andrew Constance, said the diving salvage operation has recovered a range of objects that were dumped into the harbour over the past 50 years.

“The salvage includes chain, rope, large tyres and lots of fishing wires as well as steel objects greater than one metre in length," Mr Constance said.

“All the salvage collected will be recycled, taken to a tip or disposed of at another appropriate site.

“The salvage will ensure the area is clear and ready for the commencement of the wharf construction later this year," he said.

Mr Constance said it was exciting for the Eden community to see this important project well underway.

"The long term economic opportunities provided will be a boon to regional tourism, local businesses and the broader community," he said.

“Site investigations will continue in July, when the Eden community can expect to see a barge used for drilling additional geotechnical boreholes to better define the nature and extent of bed rock material that may need to be removed for cruise ship berthing.

The work is being funded through an agreement between the federal and NSW governments and Bega Valley Shire Council.
