In my understanding, many, if not most, of the servicemen involved in that campaign had no understanding of how things would turn out for them all.
There was a strong concept of serving king and country and being part of a great adventure.
The ‘adventure’, ended up being something far worse than what was imagined.
I sometimes wonder if those involved would have had a different attitude if they had a realistic understanding of what was to happen.
The concept of sacrifice, is a consistent theme through the writings of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.
From the very start of the biblical record, when people went their own way which was very different to what God intended, God had a plan to bring people back to Himself.
This plan was based on Jesus sacrificing himself to pay the price to enable all of us to come into a right and wholesome relationship with God.
Jesus understood the full implications of God’s plan and the wonderful truth is how Jesus was ready, ‘to go’, with God’s plan for OUR benefit.
He knew what was ahead of Him and He maintained focus, despite having a realisation of the pain he would suffer.
As we recognise the sacrifice servicemen have made for our benefit, let’s also be ready to accept the benefits of Jesus’ sacrifice.
