The hotel was a business housed within this building, and ceased to exist quite some time ago.
What we have is a building - NOT a pub - its beautiful architechture steeped in history reaching back to pioneer days.
Beautiful architechure???! I hear you say. Yes, beautiful architechture.
Many don't know this, but way back in the 1950's, the building was given its first facelift, which is what's visible to us today.
However, when engineers and builders have examined it, they've found that not only is the structure sound, but that all the original work is still there underneath, begging for its ugly 50's face to be peeled away so it may breathe again.
THIS is what we want to save. To bring to life.
To preserve AND USE for generations to come. NOT a pub.
USE? you ask. Yes, use. The supermarket is going ahead.
We are NOT trying to stop the supermarket.
What we need to do is keep the facade of the building standing, with the supermarket complex behind it.
The facade is a considerable space, which can house perhaps five businesses - from a cafe to a souvenir shop to a local and aboriginal art centre to a hostel on the second floor.
Businesses catering to that ever-growing industry which we must now focus upon - TOURISM.
It has been well-studied that visitors come to a town from their streets of concrete boxes, not to see more concrete boxes, but to experience Australia's history. THIS is what we're fighting for.
NOT a pub. Our history. Our future.
