I was part of a gathering on Saturday outside the Hotel Australasia.

That gathering then became a brief news item on WIN Illawarra news.
What shocked me, when watching it on TV, was the claim that a third supermarket was needed to service Eden's growing population.
If one is to bother looking at census numbers, one can see that there has been an increase of 37 people residing in the town, between the 2006 and the 2011 head count.
However, that still leaves the town 103 short of the number in residence here in 2001.
May I remind everyone that the Coles supermarket was still a few years from opening when that turn of the century census was taken.
The town was surviving quite nicely with the two smaller supermarkets back in those days.
Since then, one of the two shut down, unable to compete with the big brand buying power.
Are we now to be complacent again with that open/shut them scenario, at the expense of a proprietor who has become an active member and contributor to the town?
At the expense of losing an integral part of the town's history, and what could be the jewel in the CBD streetscape?
A money-spinner for the town and for the council?
It's time the developers were a little more forthcoming about their real interests, and stop gambling on our town's future purely to line an outsider's pocket.
If any readers agree, I'm hoping to see you outside of the building on Saturday at 11am, to show your support for this cause.
