A Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue spokesman said a cardboard box caught alight at about 11am from a candle on a birthday cake inside it.
This ignited plastic writing material.
Firefighters said two students reported it to their teacher quickly.
He said the students’ quick response and that the classroom had a pitched ceiling saved the room and possibly the whole block.
A teacher put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, and a school spokeswoman said Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue were called as a precautionary measure and classes resumed soon after.
