A German raider, the Wolf, laid mines in the shipping channel just off the coast and one of these hit the SS Cumberland, eventually sinking it near Gabo Island.
Undoubtedly this will be one of the stories that local World War I historian Peter Lacey includes when he presents a series of ‘World War I’ talks in Eden later this month.
This ‘beginners’ course on World War I, Australia’s involvement in WWI, and the impact that the War had on the NSW South Coast runs on Wednesday mornings for six weeks, commencing February 25.
It has been organised by the Eden Community Access Centre and will be held in the Meeting Room at Eden Library.
“We will welcome anyone wishing to attend the whole course, as well as those wanting to attend just one or two of the sessions,” Vera Clark from the Eden Community Access Centre explained.
“And with a charge of just $4 per person per session for those attending the whole course, and $5 per person per session for those just coming to individual talks, we’re really striving to make these talks as accessible as possible.”
“Peter has previously run the same course in Bermagui on a number of occasions, in Bega and in Narooma, and on each occasion he received a lot of praise from attendees.”
“He has extensive knowledge about World War I, has researched and published several books about World War I and the NSW South Coast, and he presents his material in an easy-to-understand, casual and quirky way.”
“So those who attend are not likely to come away disappointed, even if they might often be shaking their heads in disbelief at just what occurred during the War, and what happened locally during the War,” Vera said.
“Limited seating at Peter’s talks means that prior bookings are essential, and these can be made by phoning the Eden Access Centre on 6496 3970.”
“We have also produced a little brochure outlining the topics to be covered during the whole course and this is now available at Eden Library or from Eden Access Centre.”
