The winners in the male and female categories of the 1200-metre Tathra Beach Real Estate Splash for Cash were, respectively, 18-year-old James Macri and 16-year-old Georgia Langford, both of Melbourne.
Mr Macri was the first across the finish line with a time of 15.20.1, and it was a nail-biting finish between him and runner-up John Fox.
It is the second year Mr Macri has won the top honour, also coming in first in 2014, and after this year’s race he said he felt “pretty good” and it was lucky the ocean conditions were so good.
“It was still tough though, as I had John [Fox] on my toes the whole time,” he said.
Mr Macri is a pool-trained swimmer, who swims competitively with the Blue Fin swimmers from Melbourne and will next compete at the Australia Day Swim at St Kilda.
While previously he has wanted to continue swimming at a highly-competitive level, now he wants to focus on doing it for fun and fitness.
He participated as he visits the Bega Valley every year for holidays.
Georgia finished with a time of 16.43.3 saying she was “pretty tired”, which was understandable as she also won her 600-metre 14-17 age division.
She is also a pool swimmer who competes in Melbourne.
“I want to be on the Australian team, but it’s probably too big a dream,” Georgia said.
She was visiting Tathra for a holiday and thought she may as well compete in the event, but had to drive back home after winning her race so said all the celebrating she would be doing would be sleeping in the car.
