ROUGH seas over the previous nights did little to encourage Tomakin Fishing Club’s blue water fishos to venture out for the club’s first competition of the season last weekend.
The situation gave the rock, beach and estuary anglers a chance to challenge for competition points.
The three fish drawn from the bag for were drummer, tailor and bream and James Nott picked up a prize with a commendable 2.56kg drummer.
Reece Nye scored a 750-gram bream but unfortunately the tailor went begging.
The blue water winner was club vice-president Trevor Brown who braved the conditions for a pan-sized 650-gram snapper.
Nye also collected the junior cock-o-the walk with a fair 2.17kg salmon and Nott scored the senior cock-o-the walk with his drummer.
With recent rain and run-off the club’s members hope estuaries and inshore reefs across the shire will clear prior to Christmas which will encourage fish to feed in those areas on outgoing and incoming tides.
The tannin content on the outgoing tide does little to encourage fish up river and several good high tides are needed to clear the problem.
Summer seems a long way off with the bout of weather anglers have experienced and hopefully it will warm over the silly season.
The club’s annual presentation is on at the end of this week and there should be no surprises.
Anglers are advised the new fishing regulations are in place and it’s expected that Fisheries and Marine Park Authority will be gracing anglers with their presence over the holiday periods.
There have been a few changes to bag limits of some species as well as legal lengths and fishos are advised to check all notices at launching ramps.
Tomakin Fishing Club member Neville Aurousseau said there was still “some confusion over Marine Park fishing areas concerning amateur anglers” and he was waiting for a response about the situation.
“Where all this is leading to is beyond me,” Aurousseau said.
“I am of the opinion that rock, beach and estuary areas should not be restricted as we rely on the encouragement of tourism to boost local trade in all coastal areas.”
Keep those rods held high and those lines tight.
Good fishing
