The base will receive over $60,000 worth of new additions, including a computerised radio control system, two new radio operator workstations, a server and upgraded wireless connections.
Following a recent upgrade of the channel 81 repeater station on Mt Imlay, three more dedicated VHF marine radio channels will also be installed on the site, along with a digital selective calling service and air base station infrastructure.
Marine Rescue Eden unit commander John McKinnon said the upgrades are timely, ahead of the summer boating season
“We’ll be off the air for a week when work starts on December 8, but we’ll have a radio truck down from Sydney to allow us to continue to operate,” Mr McKinnon said.
“It’s a major project, and with the work being done on Mt Imlay there will be significant improvements in monitoring range and performance on both sides of the border.
“The new facilities at the base will also be very beneficial for our work during the Sydney to Hobart yacht race [in December].
“We’re looking forward to again providing 24-hour coverage for the fleet as it heads south.”
Marine Rescue Eden volunteers also attended a barbecue at the base on Saturday, as Mr McKinnon thanked them for another year of work on behalf of the community.
