A spokesperson at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed on Friday the DPP had lodged a detention application and that it will be heard in the Downing Centre District Court in Sydney on December 4.
Former Bega Cheese CEO Van Ryn on Tuesday pleaded guilty in Bega Local Court to 12 separate child sexual abuse charges, including the most serious, “persistent sexual abuse of a child”, which carries a maximum of 25 years’ jail.
He was committed to the District Court for sentencing on February 2, 2015.
However, after his bail was continued despite the guilty plea, NSW Attorney General Brad Hazzard called for an urgent review into the circumstances and urged the DPP to step in and appeal the decision.
“Having read some of the alleged facts I am extremely concerned about the decision to grant bail,” Mr Hazzard said this week.
“I have contacted the Director of Public Prosecutions and asked the DPP to urgently review the circumstances and consider lodging an appeal against the granting of bail.”
On Friday, the Bega District News confirmed that appeal has now been made and the matter will be heard on Thursday.
Until the hearing, Van Ryn remains out on bail with strict conditions including reporting to Merimbula Police Station five days a week, surrendering his passport, being banned from coming within a 5km radius of Tathra, not being allowed to contact any of the alleged victims, and staying with family members away from Tathra.
