Now in its 34th year, Brunette said he was just one of a “dedicated clan of crustry old surfers” who felt compelled to run the event each year.

Events start tomorrow, Thursday, and will run right through until Sunday, with Club Sapphire forming a base of operations for all the official proceedings. 

 Described as the “holy grail” of the sport, the Merimbula Classic attracts some big names on the surfing tour each year, as well as hundreds of visitors from around Australia. 

Co-ordinator John Smythe said a number of big names take part. 

“The event boasts current and past world and Australian champions, along with a contingent of enthusiasts keen to get out in the water,” Smythe said. 

The Classic has evolved from the early days where it was run purely as a wave-sailing competition. 

“To include kite surfing and now stand up paddle (SUP) surfing there is hardly an excuse not to be in the water,” Smythe said. 

“Except to enjoy the barbecue and a few coldies after the long days of surf and wind.”

Smythe said events, as always, are in the hands of the weather gods, but most events should start from Main Beach. 

SUP paddlers will control the waves in the morning, but once the winds pick up they will be driven from the surf by the hordes of eager wave-sailors and kite surfers. 

Spectators are more than welcome and there are a few spots around town to see some of the action. 

You will get a view from Bar Beach and the Wharf, but organisers said the best spot - and safest - is by far the Main Beach. 

It is also where the Sailboard Club will run it’s renowned barbecue for competitors and spectators alike. 

Events will include a disco at Club Sapphire on Friday night. 

Saturday night includes live music by the Figments and Sunday afternoon is the competition presentation. 

This year, there is over $50,000 in prizes up for grabs including new kites, board and overseas holidays to some of the world’s most desirable surfing destinations. 

Smythe said you can see the surfers in action from early each morning and the kites will hit the water as soon as the wind picks up.
