The people of Eden certainly think so too, with Browns Butchery scoring multiple nominations for the Excellence in Eden Business Awards this week.
Robert and his team have been catapulted into the mix for the best retail business award, with Leon Rombouts also nominated twice for best customer service by an individual.
“You never expect to get this kind of recognition, but it’s nice to get it,” Robert said.
“It’s a fine acknowledgement that we’re still doing things well as the longest running business in Eden.
“Customer service is everything in a retail business, especially in a small town.”
There’s over 60 years of family history in the trade, with Robert the latest in the line after taking over from his father, Max, whose caricature greets customers as they enter the store.
Browns is a multi-award winning business, with their pure pork sausages voted Australia’s best a few years ago, and more recently having their homestyle burgers declared the Far South Coast’s best in 2014.
But it’s not all about the food.
The nomination, submitted by a local resident, praises the business for its willingness to give young locals a start, and its support of the town’s sporting clubs.
“That’s what we like to do – we get young, local boys in and turn them into men with an apprenticeship,” Robert said.
“It’s good to see them grow.”
Leon, who has been with Browns for the last eight or nine years, said his double nomination for best customer service by an individual came as a welcome surprise.
A butcher by trade for 14 years, Leon was praised for his manners and willingness to go above and beyond for customers in both submissions.
“It’s nice to know people appreciate it and are happy to have me serve them,” he said.
“I started in the butcher shop across the road in 2000, when I was 16, and left town for a while before I started here.
“I try to give advice and always be helpful, and I must be doing alright if I’ve been nominated,” he laughed.
Nominations for all six categories of the 2014 Excellence in Eden Business Awards close on Monday, November 17, ahead of the gala presentation night at Jigamy Farm on Saturday, December 6.
