Now is the time to get those old shoeboxes down from the top cupboard to see if you have any old photographs showing local end-of-war celebrations, soldiers home on leave, war memorials or local ANZAC Day parades, particularly small town commemorations.
“A previous request for World War I photographs for the Images of our History calendar returned only a few prints, so the project has been extended to include World War II and other wars that Australian men and women were involved in,” local and family history librarian, Linda Albertson, said.
“A hundred years is a long time for photographs to survive, and we’re hopeful that extending the period to include World War II will unearth some gems of local photographic history.
“We aim to put out a calendar that represents the whole shire as much as possible and we do rely on people from all towns, villages and localities contributing,” Ms Albertson said.
People can either donate or lend photographs to the library.
Loaned photographs will be carefully digitised and the original will be returned to the owner.
“Images of Our History is the library’s ongoing photographic digitisation project," community engagement and information manager, Kylee Cowgill, said.
"We encourage people to bring in any old photographs for digitisation at any time, but over the next six weeks we are especially looking for old photographs that show the impact wars had on local people."
If you have a great wartime photo that you would like to share, please contact Ms Albertson at Bega Library on 6499 2127.
