The solar panels that power up the channel, which is used to maintain radio contact with vessels travelling south out of Twofold Bay, appeared to have been vandalised by rocks, but ageing equipment and a lack of direct sunlight during the day were also said to be contributing factors.
Further work will be carried out on the site, atop Mt Imlay, as part of a significant marine communications upgrade on both sides of the border.
“There was an issue with the batteries [in the solar panels], but that’s now been fixed,” Marine Rescue Eden unit commander John McKinnon said.
“It’s fully operational again now, and we’re very pleased with the result.”
