As Chairman of the Eden Foreshore Committee, I would like to comment on the recent debate regarding the actions of the Eden Cove Residents Group and the unfortunate situation caused by misleading information, from Council, regarding the closing of access to the Curalo foreshore on the north side.

The unfortunate wording created a rift within the community and caused angst to the ECRG, which was completely unwarranted.
This is a very sad situation in a small community.
The Eden Cove Residents Group have worked tirelessly on a number of issues relating to the area in which they live and their input in the completion of the Curalo walking track has been a significant contribution in convincing Council to provide $200,000 in the 2014/15 budget to complete the track.
This funding has also made it possible to apply for Community Partnership funding to ensure the completion of this track.
Since 2002/3 I have made representations to Council officers relating to the need for vehicle access to the reserve locally known as the old racecourse.
The answer has always been that it is a vehicle free zone as designated in the Management plan.
Historically the community of Eden has had access to the eastern end of the racecourse since before I was born.
My discussions with Council have never given me any insight as to when the Council consulted the community on this issue.
I am sure that the consultation process should have been an integral part of the development of the management plan.
If good can come of the situation at the Cove, it is that a large number of people have become keen to push for vehicle access to their foreshore. Not over someone’s private block, but through Bega Valley Shire, recognising the need of the Eden community as a whole, and providing a road that all can use.
It seems certain that this issue will not go away – and neither should it!
The other issue that Council seems very reluctant to address, is how disabled and elderly will actually access the walking track that is designed to provide ALL with the opportunity to enjoy this unique part of our community.
I hope, and am sure they do, that members of the Eden Cove community will recognise the fantastic effort the ECRG have put in and ensure the ECRG or a similar group, will take up the challenge and continue the sterling work of the retiring members.
