A vibrant sea of colour filled the Eden Public School hall on Monday, as students dressed as their favourite book characters for the annual Children’s Book Week parade.
Where’s Wally and the Cat in the Hat were the costumes of choice, while many others including Captain America, Harry Potter, the Mad Hatter, Robin Hood, Iron Man, Spiderman and Pocahontas made an appearance.
Even the most widely read book in the world was represented, with Joseph Wilson coming as his namesake, Saint Joseph.
Awards were presented to the most creative student in each class, as well as the student who looked most like their chosen book character.
The students received a certificate and a voucher, donated by Booktique Merimbula, and the One Stop Discount Shop.
School librarian Melina Caldwell said the chance to dress up and parade around is a good way to promote the fun of reading.
“Reading is an integral part of the culture here at Eden Public School,” Ms Caldwell said.
“This gives us an opportunity to promote that and get the students interested in reading.
“We’re also holding a one-day book fair, so they can come and buy some books and discover some new characters.”
