In the final game for the 2012 season, the Eden women’s league tag team showed just how far they’ve come with a strong defensive performance against the undefeated Cooma Fillies, going down 6-0.
With a sniff at a semi-final spot, they had to beat the minor premiers who had rolled over the top of them in their previous encounters, 36-0 the best they’d done. It was a long shot but they came mighty close!
Within the first five minutes Cooma had scored and converted a lucky try off a kick on the last tackle, making the score 6-0.
The Eden women kept their heads up, continuing to play hard and show what kind of a team they had become.
Kamilla Grubesic, Amber Seckold, Debbie Heron, Summer Isaac and Rhiannon Richardson all had some good runs, while Jemma Danvers and Chelsea Cassie used their speed to chase down the ball whenever it was kicked.
Sharon Spink and Luci Elton suffered injuries but continued to put their bodies on the line and kept running.
The defensive strength of the team was a highlight with some good tags made by Emily Owen, Jess Farrell, Kim Flint, Linda Allen and Julie Staight, often defending on the try line.
Sunday’s game was one of the best the Eden’s Tigresses have played and was a clear indicator of immense improvement, considering the thrashings they had suffered previously against the Cooma Fillies.
The majority of sets were completed and there were very few handling errors, even in the muddy and wet conditions.
It’s a shame that the season has come to an end for the girls but they have all enjoyed the time spent together and the fun times still to come.
Tigers president Graham White, who was instrumental in getting league tag into Group 16, praised the efforts of the women’s team.
“As an old(er) footballer who loves the game I am immensely proud of the passion and commitment they have shown all season,” he said.
“This is what helps make our club, our team and our town so strong. They take pride in being a red and white Tiger – we are very rare.”
In more good news for the club, Kamilla Grubesic and Amber Seckold were selected to play in the Group 16 League Tag representative side.
