Students on deck for marine careers

A super yacht master, a dive boat instructor and a navy seaman were some of the marine career choices considered by 33 high school students participating in a marine industry promotion day in Eden on Tuesday.

Hosted by South Coast Workplace Learning, the day included presentations from the Australian Maritime College (AMC), TAFE, Svitzer, Fisheries, Water Police and NSW Roads and Maritime.

Thanks to a training partnership between TAFE and local schools, some of the students are already studying their coxswain’s course at school while others are planning on applying for direct entry to the navy or just simply exploring an interest in the marine world.

Naval architect and lecturer at the AMC David Harte based his presentation on the college’s Maths in Schools program and was pleased to be part of the day’s events.

“I love the fact that there are people here building that marine based focus and it’s good to talk to those people,” he said.

“Today the kids got to see that if they want to be the operator of a boat they can, if they want to be the one who designs the boat, they can.”
