Dear Editor,
A meeting will be held in the Sacred Heart School library, Morris Street Cootamundra at 7pm on Sunday, August 12 to organise the Cootamundra Catholic Schools Reunion to be held over the long weekend, October 5 to 7, 2013. The reunion will be a special occasion, celebrating 100 years since the De La Salle Brothers opened their school in Cootamundra, October 13, 1913. It will also be the 131st anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy, September 26, 1882 to take over the school from lay teachers (October 2). Members of both Orders will attend the reunion.
Cootamundra became the founder of co-education in Catholic High Schools in Australia in 1967, when the De La Salle Brothers and Sisters of Mercy combined to teach mixed sex classes for the first time in Australia, following a special dispensation granted by the Holy See in Rome. Previously the Brothers were not allowed teach female students. The combined Convent and Brothers School is now registered as The Sacred Heart Central School, Cootamundra.
It will be the 11th reunion held at five yearly intervals, the first in 1963 attended by 400 De La Salle Old Boys to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Brother’s arrival. The reunion is open to all ex-students of a Catholic School in Cootamundra as well as spouses, partners and friends.
It is impossible to contact all former pupils. Please pass on the word by contacting others. It is an ideal opportunity to organise class reunions. We are anxious to get as many postal and e-mail addresses as possible as well as phone numbers. Class roles are available for most Year 10 classes from 1965. Please pass on information to the secretary. Further information will be forwarded in future months to those expressing interest.
Keep the date clear for a memorable weekend in Cootamundra with former school mates and new friends. An enjoyable time is assured.
The Secretary,
Catholic Schools Reunion Committee
