Mike Kelly MP has refuted Liberal candidate Peter Hendy’s claim that the Eden-based navy or multipurpose wharf and ammunitioning facility would be compromised under a possible relocation of navy headquarters from Garden Island to Brisbane.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will announce tomorrow that, if re-elected, he wants to start planning to relocate the historic defence facilities chiefly to Brisbane.
Dr Kelly said emphatically this afternoon that there is no threat to the Royal Australian Navy facility on Twofold Bay.
“The ammunition wharf and depot is a secure facility located where it is because of the security offered in many ways,” Dr Kelly said.
“The location of that facility is completely unrelated to any proposed review of navy facilities at Potts Point.
“It doesn’t relate at all to where a navy vessels home base is,” Dr Kelly said.
“I am happy to give an assurance there will be no impact on the Twofold Bay EO depot and navy wharf,” he said.
