While other students were enjoying their holidays, Leanna Severs, Tom Reichelt, Mark Hooper and Jaidyn Marsden prepared for a five-day traverse from Lake Wellington to Lakes Entrance.
The four students, and teacher Luke Molan, travelled to Roseneath Caravan Park to meet their sea kayak guide Derek Wigley.
The first day consisted of developing paddling skills and familiarising themselves with a fleet of two double and three single expedition sea-kayaks with pedal operated rudders and water tight compartments.
The day’s paddling concluded with a capsize and rescue drill.
There were many challenges for students over the coming days but their first hurdle was packing their boats, including enough water to last for several days of camping.
It’s not a simple task to pack and waterproof food, water, clothes and camping gear.
The weather mostly treated the students kindly with fair winds, but some overcast windy weather on the first day.
Students saw many different environments throughout the lake system, some amazing campsites, and across long stretches of (mostly) calm water.
As a result, students developed a stronger connection and appreciation of the natural environment.
Travelling in sea-kayaks, an interest in the wind and weather quickly developed, as well as navigation skills.
Packing boats, cooking and camping each day challenged and developed organisational skills.
