Crossing the digital divide

Tech-savvy senior Jill Troth tore down barriers to the digital revolution at the Eden Community Access Centre on Monday as a full schedule of Seniors Week activities got underway.

The centre has been encouraging seniors to “Cross the digital divide” with hands-on workshops about new forms of technology including Apple devices, androids, gaming and exercise, and new ways of communicating.

Mrs Troth is a user of the iPad and iPod and uses them to stay in touch with family, run the household, listen to books and take and share photographs.

She is also a user of social media like Twitter and Facebook.

“I don’t know what I did without my iPad,” she said.

Her appreciative audience numbered 11, three with their own iPads, and one dog.

Today (Thursday) John McKinnon is scheduled to demonstrate the benefits of Skype, a very low-cost way of communicating with voice or video calls.

Tomorrow (Friday) Clare Whiter will lead a workshop on android devices.
