If realised, the venture would create jobs and flow on benefits for the town.
Member for Eden-Monaro Dr Mike Kelly convened a round-table at Parliament House yesterday, to progress discussions with major stakeholders about importing wind turbine components through the port.
The meeting was attended by representatives from Wind Prospect, Downer Engineering, Sydney Ports, Roads and Maritime Services, Essential Energy, Customs and Quarantine, and Bega Valley Shire Council general manager Peter Tegart.
Dr Kelly said discussions were fruitful, and all parties were working through the range of issues involved.
“There are a number of technical issues associated with bringing these huge component parts through Eden – including wharf and bridge loading limits, and possible obstructions along the road route from Eden to the high country.
“We are making good progress in overcoming these hurdles, and I am hopeful that we will be able to make a final announcement by May.
“Bringing wind farm parts through Eden will create jobs at the port, and have flow on benefits for both Eden and Bombala due to the large scale of associated truck activity.”
The first import phase – with an estimated 18 ships and 800 truck movements – would involve components for the new 66-turbine wind farm at Boco Rock near Nimmitabel.
However, Dr Kelly said there was the potential for ongoing activity as wind farm developers at Bungendore, Collector and Yass were looking to Eden as a desirable port of entry.
There is also scope to explore container shipment possibilities over the coming years.
“The potential of Eden as a deep water port is huge, and yet to be unlocked,” Dr Kelly said.
“We are so fortunate to have a wealth of renewable energy developments getting off the ground in Eden-Monaro, and the opportunity for these developments to have additional benefits in terms of stevedoring, transport and business is very exciting.”
