Bare feet, a drowned pitch an endless barbecue and a bottomless bar all made for a great day of cricket at Eden Sportsground on Sunday.
Short games, casual umpiring and frequent showers were the order of the day until rain set in at about 2.30pm.
Men and women, boys and girls, young and old all gave it a go in true Aussie fashion.
There were speccy catches and speccy injuries (best wishes to Colin Clarke who broke a rib taking a catch in the first game).
When rain became an issue organiser Drew Mudaliar called a short break and there was talk of moving celebrations to the Great Southern Inn but the spirited players were enthusiastic to continue, and so the umpires were equipped with brooms and sent back out in a valiant but hopeless effort to keep the pitch dry.
Determined to play on, even though the crowd could barely see through the rain, Grant Builders were the eventual victors.
They defeated newcomers Eden Gym by “about” 12 runs.
Grant Builders elected to gift $400 from money raised on the day to Pambula hospital. ESSCI also benefitted from running the barbecue.
Youngsters were also put through their paces with several kids’ games held during the day.
Club president Drew Mudaliar congratulated everyone on their participation and hoped that the event will be returned to January 26 next year following other Australia Day club commitments this year.
