Eden should be proud of community effort

The Eden Ladies Golf Open Tournament was a huge success due to five things.

Firstly a big thank you goes out to the golf members, the organisers and those doing clean ups and gardening who were all very generous with their time.

South East Fibre Exports sponsored the open tournament with Vince Phillips assisting with the presentations.

The Eden Ladies Golf Club would like to thank Cheryl Gordon from Boydtown for the donation of a weekend for two.

This was raffled with a new golf bag donated by Lisa and Lorraine from the Eden Golf Shop.

One hundred and fifteen golfers took part, coming from as far as Moruya, Sale and Coolamatong.

Nine clubs contested the Silver Salver sponsored by the Eden Fishermen’s Club and was presented by Don McTaggett.

In times of economic down turns, Eden has been supportive and generous, the weather kind, and everyone went home with only praise for our town and golf course.

As they say “Done good!”

Good service

in Eden

On Monday our car broke down outside the Tourist Information Centre. We had the NRMA attend, and a very helpful chap came to assist.

The upshot was the car was towed to Fraser Motors and fixed at a very fair price.

As we are on holidays in Eden we appreciated the care and great service given and we will be advising the RACV in Melbourne on our return home.

Thanks again.

Well done to

the Magnet

Well done on your circulation.

It’s good to see a local newspaper dealing with real news with real journalism.

Keep it up.

Reunion for cannery workers

July 9, 2009 marks the tenth anniversary of the closure of the Heinz tuna cannery at Cattle Bay.

The factory had commenced operations in 1949, as the Green Products Cannery at Cattle Bay. Kraft Foods bought the business in 1961, and sold to Heinz in 1974.

A reunion will be held on Friday July 10, 2009 at the Eden Fishermen’s Club, Imlay Street, Eden to mark the occasion.

A carvery buffet at $20 per head at the Captain’s Table Restaurant is planned, with a gathering downstairs at the club afterwards.

The Eden Killer Whale Museum has extended an invitation to past employees of Heinz Greenseas to attend the museum for pre-dinner drinks at 6pm on Friday, July 10 and view the exhibition on the history of the Heinz Greenseas Cannery. If you would like to attend these functions please contact Rhonda Gallagher on 6496 2752 or 0439 415 555.

Time to say thank you

Finally Mutries’ plaque has been finished.

There are many thank yous to be said.

Brenda and Mark Lawrence for the timely job and beautiful presentation of the plaque... thank you.

Fritz Drenkahn, Peter Cook, and Cheryl Gordon put in a substantial amount out of their own pockets ... thank you.

And on the day of the wake at the Hotel Australasia... thank you to those who contributed. You know who you are.

Phil McMannus, thank you for selling Mutries’ motor bike and adding what was left to pay.

Thank you to Robert Millard for approaching me to let me know the company he works for, Svitzer Australasia was prepared to help pay for the plaque but by then it had all been covered...thank you.

A rock will be assembled out near where Mutries lived and the plaque will be placed there.

Another gathering to finalise his life and passing will again be put in the Magnet.

Thank you everyone for your input. You know who you are.

Visiting school excursions rely on Pambula Hospital service

I write to you regarding the planned closure of the Pambula Hospital.

I am the assistant principal of Tallangatta Secondary College and our school has conducted a Year 7 school camp at Edrom Lodge for the past 20 years, a camp that will continue to be run in future years.

In that time we have been able to access the excellent services of the Pambula Hospital when emergencies have arrived.

In our organisation we have been able to assure our parents that when we take their children to Eden we have a fully functional hospital that we can be accessed readily from Edrom Lodge, Eden and Pambula where our itinerary focuses.

In our last trip to Eden in March we had an outbreak of gastro which was treated immediately by the hospital and minimised the flow on effects to the rest of the group through correct treatment and precautionary advice and the actions when we returned to the camp.

On other occasions we have had broken bones, and last year a serious sting that needed expert local treatment and advice.

On all occasions the assistance from the Pambula Hospital staff has been excellent.

I do hope that financial expediency does not lead to the hospital being closed and moved to Bega as was highlighted in my reading of the issue.

We come from a small country town 350 kilometres from Melbourne and 42 kilometres from Albury/Wodonga and our local hospital has been bolstered trough appropriate funding and is a central hub providing a huge range of services to our community.

I hope the authorities look carefully at some models of operation that do not lead to the closure of the Pambula Hospital.

Country communities need strong vibrant organisations such as schools and hospitals and the shire councils so that we can provide the necessary services that are required.
