2:58 PM AEDT | I can’t help but be the Pollyanna this week - the weather is just too glorious for words not to be anything else. And with it we received the unexpected boon of the cruise ship MS Volendam, bringing over 1000 visitors to Eden on Tuesday. Bateman’s Bay’s loss was definitely Eden’s gain.
12 Mar 10 | Having water is essential to being able to survive. Having a job - or a source of income - is essential to being able to survive. So when these two issues clash head on, it’s bound to get messy.
05 Mar 10 | You might be forgiven for thinking my headline refers to the 1966 Italian epic spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Leone, starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in the title roles.
25 Feb 10 | I’m not known for knocking council. God knows they have a tough enough job.
18 Feb 10 | It’s hard not to take a literal approach to the idiom “It never rains but it pours” this week as the Bega Valley is declared a natural disaster area following Sunday and Monday’s deluge, on top of last week’s excellent rainfall.
11 Feb 10 | It’s hard not to comment on last week’s rain and the prospect of more to come. Visitors to our neck of the woods are sometimes surprised by our loo flushing rules (no need to repeat them, I’m sure you know the colourful rhyme), shower restrictions and garden philosophy - it either survives or it doesn’t deserve to.
21 Jan 10 | If going back to school is anything like going back to work after having holidays it can be quite traumatic.
14 Jan 10 | This week I am pleased to announce the cogs of democracy have turned for the people.
17 Dec 09 | Tonight is late night shopping in Eden. Santa will visit and parents with young ones can record the occasion with a 2009 Santa photo. One lucky person will have the chance to go for it in Chester’s Foodworks great grocery grab. I hope the contenders are planning a strategy to make the most of the opportunity.
29 Oct 09 | This week our paper features a 12-page colour ‘wrap’; your guide to this year’s Eden Whale Festival. As we put this feature together I was struck by a number of things.
22 Oct 09 | Hard to pick up a newspaper lately that doesn’t scream the headline ‘Having a whale of a time’ next to great pictures of humpback and southern right whales as they feed and frolic along our spectacular coastline.
15 Oct 09 | On my list of things to do this weekend is a stroll along the completed boardwalk. Regrettably I was unable to attend last week’s opening and so I missed out on sharing with the large number of community members present, the first inaugural stroll.
24 Sep 09 | Monday night saw a WIN TV news report on proposed Port of Eden developments. Also on Monday night was the ABC’s 7.30 Report story on one person’s traumatic family maternity experience.
17 Sep 09 | In the news this week is the possible Telstra shake-up that would see their days as the major wholesaler and retailer in Australian telecommunications numbered. Is that a brilliant idea or what? When I have to deal with Telstra it feels like my life is ‘on hold’.
11 Sep 09 | In his background to the November 2008 Final Report of the Special Commi-ssion of Inquiry, Acute Care Services in NSW Public Hospitals, Peter Garling SC said “In the months before and since this Special Commission of Inquiry commenced, there has been public disquiet over the state of the NSW hospital system.
03 Sep 09 | Last week I listened to a conversation about how fabulous it would be for Eden if we became a super yacht destination.
27 Aug 09 | Developments this week on the local tourism front have seen welcome bridge-building between Sapphire Coast Tourism and the Eden Chamber of Commerce and news that a full time manager will be appointed to the Eden Visitor Information Centre.
20 Aug 09 | Well done netballers! I would like to congratulate the group of Eden girls who attended the netball carnival in Merimbula on Sunday. Our girls all did Eden proud. They were up against teams bigger, stronger, older and more experienced. They dealt with all conditions: wind, showers, cold and smoke.
20 Aug 09 | On Friday a public meeting will be held at the Great Southern Inn at 4.30 pm which I urge anyone who has an interest in developing tourism, or in just developing this town, to attend.
