The Under 18 Junior women’s team from Sapphire Coast Water Polo Club has earned third place at the Canberra Cup at the weekend.
The girls lost the play-off for the grand final by just a few goals to eventual cup winners Nordek by just one goal.
It is the team’s best competition result since forming three years ago as an under 14 side.
Competitions are scarce and to train the team often breaks into two groups for games at Bega and Eden pools.
Competitions like this one are critical to team development.
The team next plans to play in the NSW Country Championships in January and Country Districts Championships in Albury in late February.
Coach Barry Grant was happy with the improvement in the team’s performance.
“They are really starting to put game plans together.
“It is great to see the development the team has made.
“The Canberra and other country teams can train all year and play in regular competition.
“We have great support from local pool operators but the season is very short with us only starting training and playing two weeks before the competition.”
A great outcome from the weekend was the donation of goals from the AIS pool that the team will look to hand over to the new Pambula Pool facility for use when it is opened.
Players come from Eden, Pambula, Pambula Beach, Merimbula, Tathra and Bega and train at both Bega and Eden pools.
The team for the Canberra Cup was: Allyssa Beasley (South Pambula), Kaila Bennett (Tura Beach) Cassie Carmen (Pambula Beach), Amy Garrod (Merimbula), Briony Grant and Freya Grant (Bega), Sam McManus (Merimbula), Danielle Nadin (Merimbula), Kelby Pointon (Bald Hills) and Sarah Rogers (Eden).
New players for women’s and men’s teams are always welcome.
