Training pays off in carnival

09 Feb, 2012 08:23 AM
Eden swimmers are training hard to represent Eden at various state competitions in coming weeks.

Following the annual competition at Eden last weekend, results from high achievers proved the hard work is paying off, particularly for those who have qualified for bigger events coming up at Sydney Aquatic Centre at Homebush in coming weeks.

A junior competition, Speedo Sprints, will be held at Homebush in coming weeks.

Georgia Caldwell, Hayden Skeers and Kye Moore all qualified with outstanding times recorded at the South East Swimming Association championships in Ulladulla last weekend.

Hannah Galloway, Sally Williams and Kaitlyn Hoare also competed and often produced new personal bests.

Swim coach John Pelling said his team performed really well in the huge field of 34 clubs.

“It’s the biggest carnival for a lot of them, it embraces Helensburg right down to Eden and out to Cooma and Jindabyne and some of them have year round facilities,” he said.

“Eden did really well.”

Hayden and Hannah Galloway have also qualified for the NSW Country Championships in March.

They were great role models for the rest of the club at the Eden Carnival which saw 80 competitors on January 29.

The club collected a swag of achievements, notably was senior swimmers Hayden Skeers and Hannah Gallaway and junior swimmers Georgia Caldwell and Kye Moore.

Hayden won six of his seven races, placing second in only one.

Hannah won three of her nine events and placed highly in the others.

Georgia won four of her six events and competed above her age group for the other two.

Junior swimmer Kye Moore placed in the top three of seven of his eight races, many of which were above his age group.

Mr Pelling congratulated his team, acknowledging the efforts that even the littlest five-year-old swimmers put into training each week.

“The juniors train a couple of afternoons a week until they get a bit older,” he said.

“The senior kids are training five afternoons a week and we’ve just eased their workload a bit, they were doing four mornings a week too.”

The Kirby Dunne Memorial swim was won by Stephen Thresher (Woden) and Kelby Pointon (Pambula).

Kirbys parents, Russell and Julie Dunne were there to present the award to the two swimmers.

Thwe award is also sponsored by John and Anne Pelling, Peter and Jennifer Grant, Joyanne and Errol McGovern and Brett and Liz Osborn.
