Glorious shut out finish for cricketers

19 Jan, 2012 08:09 AM
Eden's Corey Spink has led the Southern team to a heroic victory in cricket’s under 14s Kookaburra Cup on Tuesday.

A strong bowling effort denied the Riverina team vital runs giving the Southern team a 148 to 144 run victory.

The Southern team won the toss and went in to bat first.

Captain Corey opened with an admirable 17 run streak before he was bowled lbw by Riverina's Jack Harper.

The team followed on with consistent batting.

Run rates were low but the Southern side were gradually adding up on the scoreboard, Liam Harley and Adam Ison both putting up double figures early in the game.

Standout batsmen for the Southern side were Chris Rajapakshe and Lachlan Whatmough.

Rajapakshe notched up 29 runs on the bat before he was called out by lbw and Whatmough amassed 21 runs not-out.

Dale Lovatt and Dylan Jordan also put double figures on the scoreboard, Lovatt bowled lbw and Jordan bowled by Luke Docherty.

At the end of their 50 overs the Southern side had put up a respectable 7/148 on the scoreboard.

Returning to the field to bowl, the determined Southern side met the Riverina batsmen with stern glares.

Fierce bowling all but shutdown the Riverina runs from the opening batsmen who were dismissed for four and five runs respectively.

However, the Riverina side hit back strongly with Angus Campbell belting an enviable 48 runs.

The Southern team were elated when Campbell was caught by Harley off the bowling of Whatmough.

With a new found confidence after shutting down the Riverina onslaught the Southern side set themselves to the task of cleaning up the following batsmen.

The resulting focused and aggressive bowling paid off with very few runs put on the board and batsmen being caught up with less than ten runs on the board.

Lovatt stood out for the Southern team in the bowling, taking five wickets for 38 runs in his 10 overs.

With Riverina's 144 runs against Southern's 148 going into the last over, tension was thick and the pressure was on both the Riverina batsmen and Southern's bowlers.

Southerns bowlers prevailed denying the team runs on the last bowl and securing the 148 to 144 victory.
