A woman remains in a Sydney hospital after being shot in the back at a private 21st birthday party south of Eden at the weekend.
Partygoers at the rural property, believed to be 20 kilometres south of Eden on the Towamba Road, have told police they heard a “crack in the distance” before a seated 47-year-old Victorian woman slumped forward in her chair.
Police have recovered ballistics from the woman’s injury and a cartridge from the scene and are confident the weapon will be identifiable following forensic examination.
Local Area Command (LAC) crime manager Kevin McNeil of Bateman’s Bay denied the shot followed a noise complaint.
He said the woman suffered injuries to her shoulder from the shooting.
“The victim was shot through the shoulder blade area but the bullet fortunately missed vital organs,” he said.
She was taken to Bega Hospital before being transferred to Sydney.
“She has undergone surgery and her prognosis is good.”
Mr McNeil said partygoers were shocked and frightened by the event.
“They had no idea where the shot came from in the darkness,” he said.
“Paramedics and police attended and secured the scene making sure partygoers were safe.”
The LAC issued a large response to the event with Bega detectives attending along with a forensic team from Goulburn and police from Eden, Merimbula and Bega stations.
