Tragic end for missing rock fisherman

08 Feb, 2012 06:13 AM
The body of a 56-year-old Canberra man who had gone missing while rock fishing off Haycock Point, north of Eden on Monday afternoon, was discovered off Merimbula at around 8pm last night.

A member of the public contacted police to advise they had spotted the body about 100 metres off the headland known as “Long Point” at the northern end of Merimbula Bay.

Volunteer Lifesavers from Tathra, and Pambula Surf Life Saving Clubs along with the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter, Eden Water Police and Marine Rescue took part in a search on Monday night and for much of Tuesday but were unable to find any trace of the missing Canberra man.

Surf Life Saving Duty Officer Andrew Edmunds praised the actions of the volunteers who all participated in the search.

“We had very challenging conditions for the two days of the search,” he said.

“Sadly we were unable to find the man alive and it is a very sad reminder why people should wear lifejackets when rock fishing.”

Eden Water Police retrieved the deceased from the water.

The man was not wearing a lifejacket when he was fishing.
