The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for the possibility of severe showers and thunderstorms, which includes the possibility of heavy rains in the Bega and Towamba area from this afternoon and possibly continuing until tomorrow.
These rains may cause local flooding along creeks and drains and in low-lying areas.
NSW State Emergency Service is urging people to take basic measures to keep themselves, their families and their property safer:
• Do not drive, ride or walk through flood water.
• Make sure your children know to stay well away from flooded creeks and drains.
• Keep a battery-operated radio and torch handy, along with spare batteries.
• Keep pets indoors.
• Clear your yard and verandah of clutter.
• If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and call 000 if you need to be rescued.
The SES also encourages people to clear their gutters, if possible, before the rain intensifies.
"As many as one-third of all the calls we receive during heavy rains have to do with water coming in under tiles due to blocked roof gutters, If you can safely clear your gutters before the rain really gets going, you can potentially save yourself a lot of trouble," said Incident Controller Angie Batey.
People needing help from the SES can ring the SES on 132 500.
