Potential Flooding for the South Coast

09 Feb, 2012 01:39 PM
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a Flood Watch and Severe Weather Warning for the South Coast of NSW.

There is a greater than 70% chance of local flash flooding as well as minor to moderate river flooding developing in the Moruya, Tuross and Bega Rivers.

Members and resources from Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Nowra, Ulladulla and Batemans Bay are currently being sent down the South Coast into the Moruya and Bega Local SES Headquarters to assist with the predicted workload.

Incident Management personnel, Storm damage crews and flood rescue operators and flood rescue boats are being deployed early before access routes may become cut. The SES have also deployed 2 helicopters, one to Moruya and one to Merimbula and also have the Westpac Rescue Helicopter based out of Moruya airport on standby for day and night operations.

The SES would appreciate the following safety messages be broadcasted:

• Keep listening to your local radio station for information and advice

• if you need assistance from the SES, call 132 500

• For life-threatening emergencies, call 000

• Check the SES website www.ses.nsw.gov.au

• Stay well clear of creeks, drains, causeways and other water ways

• Do not go sightseeing

• Clean your gutters and downpipes of any debris

• Run-off from rain can back-up under the eaves and into your ceiling which can cause major damage.

• Never drive, ride or walk through flood water - this is the main cause of death during floods as water may be deeper or faster flowing than people think and may contain hidden snags and debris. As little as 20 centimetres of fast flowing flood water can knock you off your feet

• Stack possessions, records, stock or equipment on benches and tables, placing electrical items on top

• Act early, as roads may become congested or close

• Ensure employees are able to get home before evacuation routes are closed

• Secure objects that are likely to float and cause damage

• Relocate waste containers, chemicals and poisons well above floor level

• Keep listening to a local radio station for further information and advice

• Keep in contact with your neighbours

• Be prepared to evacuate if advised

• If you are trapped by floodwaters stay inside your home or business until advised otherwise. Shelter in the highest part of the building.
