Competition won by a fluke

29 Oct, 2009 09:14 AM
Maria Wiki’s photo of Kane Wiki in Twofold Bay has been judged the overall winner in our LOCAL PEOPLE: LOCAL PLACES photography competition.

Judge John Ford of Merimbula’s CameraHouse said: “It’s a bit different, a bit quirky, with nice balance and action. It also has that Twofold Bay feel about it, an early morning bright sort of feel.”

Co-judge and Magnet managing editor Amanda Stroud agreed. “It has a lazy feel to it that I love - the sea is calm, you can almost taste the tang of salt through the snorkel, and imagine the vision through the goggles slipping between underwater and on top of the water.”

The photo captured a shot of a sea eagle taking a baitfish on a five-year-old digital camera.

“It was a bit of a fluke actually,” Maria Wiki said.

“Kane had just popped his head up out of the water and we had seen an eagle circling and wondered if it would take a leftover bait fish.”

Mrs Wiki, who generally takes family photographs, said she has become more aware of photo opportunities since participating in the competition, and can’t wait to take lots of photographs with her new camera.

Maria wins a Fujifilm Fine Pix z200fd super flat digital camera and accessories valued at $500, from Eden’s Retravision and Fujifilm.
