The southern migration is off to an earlier than normal start this year, with multiple whale sightings being reported around Twofold Bay daily.
Ros Butt of Cat Balou said the humpbacks have arrived in numbers, with many spotted feeding around the bay in the last week.
Eight were spotted just outside Twofold Bay on Saturday, another six were sighted five miles east of Eden on Monday, and two more were seen on Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday just outside Boydtown was a Southern Right whale.
“Southern Rights are normally found near the Great Australian Bight, sightings are certainly not as plentiful around here as the humpback whales,” Mrs Butt said.
“On Tuesday morning we spotted eight different pods between North Head and four miles out.
“The early morning is a great time for shore based spotting,” she said.
While mothers and calves cannot be expected until later in the season, plenty of sub-adult whales will be heading past Eden to “stop off and do some opportunist feeding”.
