NSW Maritime has announced the successful tender for stage two of works for the facility to store cargo at NSW’s southern-most port of Eden on Twofold Bay.
“The work will take approximately 12 weeks to complete, at a cost of $1.6 million,” NSW Maritime manager ports and projects John Sturday said.
“Work is expected to start shortly - possibly even next week.”
NSW Maritime says the cargo storage area south of Eden will provide a platform for booming softwood exports.
The four hectare site, near the multi-purpose wharf, will double the size of the current facility that was built three years ago, primarily to support Bombala timber plantations.
The wharf and cargo storage area has enabled the export of softwood logs from Bombala.
Currently more than 300,000 tonnes per annum are being handled through the facility.
Works will include surface treatment of the four hectare area, the installation of a sediment pond and an irrigation system.
Mr Sturday said the winning tender went to Specialised Earthworks P/L of Bega.
Three companies put forward tenders for the job.
The upgrade has the potential to attract industries other than timber.
The offshore oil and gas industry and the mining industries are potential users of the multi-user facility.
